Nodding syndrome research revisited

چکیده
Nodding syndrome is one of several forms onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) seen among children in areas formerly hyperendemic for the transmission Onchocerca volvulus. These are highly prevalent and clustered certain villages located close to blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) breeding sites. OAE presents with a wide spectrum seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic head nodding impaired cognitive function, growth stunting delayed puberty. In 2014, present authors published perspective paper this journal which hypothesized that may be caused by either neurotropic virus transmitted blackflies or an endosymbiont within O. volvulus parasite. Seven years later, critical review progress research, assesses whether it still plausible could cause.

Nodding Syndrome
An epidemic illness characterized by head nodding associated with onchocerciasis has been described in eastern Africa since the early 1960s; we summarize published reports and recent studies. Onset of nodding occurs in previously healthy 5-15-year-old children and is often triggered by eating or cold temperatures and accompanied by cognitive impairment. Its incidence has increased in Uganda and...
متن کاملFinancing and collaboration on research and development for nodding syndrome
BACKGROUND Nodding syndrome is a neurological disease with no known cure or treatment, impacting children aged 3-18 years old, mainly in East Africa. Children progressively develop varying degrees of cognitive impairment which may lead to severe wasting, a vegetative state and, eventually, death. Despite its 50-year existence, little is known about its cause, risk factors and prognosis. It is a...

This article summarizes observations made in Northern Uganda and a lecture given at the Nodding Syndrome Workshop in Nagasaki September 2013. The objective of the manuscript is to summarize the current knowledge on nodding syndrome and to provide an agenda for investigations into the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and care management of nodding syndrome in Uganda.
متن کاملPENDRED\'S SYNDROME REVISITED
Pendred's syndrome is defined as a triad of congenital perceptive hearing loss, goiter, and abnormal perchlorate test. Three brothers with Pendred's syndrome [P.S.] are reported. The oldest brother has hearing loss (he has been deaf and mute since childhood) and has a large goiter. A thyroid scan revealed euthyroid multinodular goiter and a perchlorate test was performed, and reported abno...

While it is rare in th...
